Poor Manufacturing Tolerances

Strengths:

Price (Better than half the price of most other competing slim fans) Quiet (if you run them in ideal conditions (<85% and horizontal) and don't have a defective unit) Powerful Includes short radiator screws and standard chassis fan screws

Weaknesses:

Produce a ticking noise, typically over 85% speed and in the vertical position, but some units produced it regardless of orientation or speed. 82% of the 11 fans I purchased were "defective" in my opinion.

Additional Comments:

Over multiple trips to the store, I went through 11 of these fans before finding 2 that didn't have some abnormal ticking sound. Typically it was only near max speed in the vertical orientation. For most people, I'd think they would be fine, particularly as SFF builds often have the fans in a horizontal position, and aren't run at max speed. However, I certainly don't intend to buy fans that don't function correctly in all normal use cases. Even more importantly, slim fans are almost always purchased for SFF builds. SFF builds are typically placed on your desk, closer to your head, meaning you'll hear any annoying, abnormal sound. Now, I didn't see any mention of this ticking from any other buyers online. Perhaps Arctic changed their manufacturing. However, having 9 out of 11 units produce an abnormal noise is unacceptable. I can clearly see inside the rotor that they use some material on one side to balance the assembly. The units with louder ticking had more material, and the two units with no ticking had very little material. This leads me to believe that Arctic simply has poor manufacturing tolerances for the rotor assembly and they aren't able to balance these defects well enough in the factory. Placing small amounts of tape on the rotor in the same or opposing side as the material did help to reduce the ticking in some cases. These fans are cheap. At 1/3 of the price of the Noctua 120mm slim Chromax fans, they are worth the effort to finding quiet units, in my opinion. Doubly so because Arctic promises a 10-year warranty, and I have heard good things about their warranty redemption. That being said, these fans are not high quality. If you want to buy with peace of mind, go for another brand. But if you want to go for budget, then give these Arctics a try. Just know you should buy every fan your store has, and then return the defective units. In my case, 82% were defective so tough luck finding perfect units.
