Good bang for the buck

Strengths:

Good cost effective drives that I use in my NAS. Right now I have 9 of these drives in my 2 back up NAS's and they just purr along.

Weaknesses:

Not real fast to write too but they are used in my backup NAS, so speed is not an issue.

Additional Comments:

If you need high speed drives then these are not for you. If you need solid drives in a back up environment then these drives are really good bang for the buck!

Controller failure was icing on a slow cake

Strengths:

Big drive Cheap

Weaknesses:

Controller died before the media or the motor A replacement controller is $75 USD

Additional Comments:

If it's just a backup drive, and you can replace it and rebuild the backup before you need the backup, then it serves a role just fine. I would not store any unique / important data on this drive.

Mediocre performance

Additional Comments:

The other reviewers have already mentioned slow performance and SMR. I bought this drive knowing the downsides. It's being used as a data storage drive for bittorrent seeding, Emby, and storing family photos. Home server OS is Windows 10. Transferring content to the drive during initial setup was painful. When transferring a few TB write speeds hover around 50MBps. Enabling bitlocker full disk encryption was similarly slow and painful, it took about a week to complete. However once the initial setup was complete, performance has been acceptable. When used for short, bursty reads and writes (the vast majority of what this drive does) the cache maxes out at 250MBps read or write. Time will tell whether the drive survives past the 2 year warranty. But after 1 month of use I'd feel comfortable recommending this drive for use in scenarios similar to mine. Just be aware of the downsides to SMR technology, and don't even consider using as part of a RAID. Don't waste your money on this.

Strengths:

Price per TB is the only benefit to these drives.

Weaknesses:

Speed is poor. Usable space is only 7.2TB formatted in NTFS. I picked one up on sale, which was good but wouldn't pay any more than that. I would pay the extra for an Enterprise-grade 7,200rpm drive.

Additional Comments:

The read/write on these drives is slow, and I'm still skeptical of the quality after reading countless reviews on how they come DoA or die within weeks or months. You get what you pay for. It will work for my need, but don't rely on this as an everyday drive.

Decent Drive

Strengths:

Very economical high capacity drive, helium filled (it doesn't say that in the product page here either).

Weaknesses:

Yes, nearly all high capacity Seagate drives (8, 10 TB) are SMR, but this isn't an issue for most folks. Write speeds are reduced in some cases due to the way the tech works. For the average user this isn't an issue, and wasn't for me either, I have 14 of these now, all purring away.

Additional Comments:

If you want to buy high capacity drives this guy is a great value. Unless write speed is critically important you cannot go wrong with this drive. I plan on writing once and reading from that point forward. I wouldn't use this as a system drive, use a SSD, but for data its great.

SMR drive, not mentioned in drive literature.

Strengths:

+8TB +Good Read Speeds

Weaknesses:

-SMR -Not Advertised as SMR -Atrocious Write Speed

Additional Comments:

Buyer Beware, after tens of hours troubleshooting I discovered this drive is SMR and, even worse, seagate has scrubbed the internet of any official reference to this being a SMR drive. Extremely disappointing.
