There is a firmware upgrade needed

Submitted on Saturday, February 16, 2019

Strengths of the product

This monitor has a firmware update issue that is the cause of the frame skipping at 144hz. I'm quite surprised that the official Asus reply does not contain a link to this: https://www.asus.com/us/support/FAQ/1038260/ This is borderline misleading by Asus I believe. For anyone having issues with this monitor not appearing smooth at high refresh rates, just google "vg248qz frame skipping" and you will see many people with this issue.

Weaknesses of the product

Additional Comments

In Asus' defence, I had this monitor RMAd via their RMA process (follow link) and have a new VG248QZ that does not frame skip. The process took aprx. 2 weeks, Asus covered all shipping costs. Follow this link if you are having issues: https://www.asus.com/us/support/FAQ/1038260/

Weaknesses of the product

I got mine in December, it has the same issues with frame skipping as the other 1 star review. Mine can't seem to produce over 60hz, even at 60 it skips some.. Before you blow me off, I've already performed all the settings changes mentioned by others below, as well as everything discussed in a popular Reddit thread.
Unlike the guy the Reddit thread, I have a camera handy, and I have about a hundred shiny photos of choppy frameskipping tests taken over the past few weeks after each new thing I've tried to do to fix it. Also, Asus has acknowledged the issue, and my serial number matches. I run this setup: i5-6600K + GTX 1060, 6GB

Additional Comments

So feel free to leave your own good review, because obviously some are defective and some are not, but please stop saying others are lying or incompetent just because you didn't get screwed. ***At the very least, get the IPR Warranty option on this bad boy if you're going to buy it; because in my recent experience Asus support is useless***

Official Reply from ASUS:

We apologize your ASUS VG248QZ Monitor is not performing up to standards as promised.

Please reach out to ASUS directly at https://www.asus.com/support/ or through Memory Express, either in person at their stores, or over the phone: https://www.memoryexpress.com/Store/Contact

Strengths of the product

Bought one today on sale and man, works for me just fine too.

Weaknesses of the product

The speakers. Don't expect anything spectacular out of them. Also, it's a TN panel so the colors aren't perfect - you won't be buying this for designing, though.

Additional Comments

If you need a 144hz monitor that does the job quite well, and you don't need super accurate sRGB colours, this is a good deal indeed. If you need super accurate color tho, why you looking at a TN panel?

Strengths of the product

Works amazingly at 144hz 1ms

Weaknesses of the product

The weakness is when people who don't no how to use a computer and expect the monitor to work as intended. 9 times outta 10 there is always some settings you will need to change on a pc to make it work at optimal settings.

Additional Comments

Anyone that says this monitor is not working properly at 144 / 1ms hasn't set there pc up properly. Yes i also had massive stuttering initially.
The problems were Windows 10 and some nVidia GPU settings. Things I recommend turning off. Anything xBox related in Windows 10. Specially windows gaming mode that is BAD!
Also if your running more then 1 monitor things to change in the nvidia settings; adjust desktop size and position perform scaling on gpu instead of default. Also configure surround, physx turn the physx to your video card instead of auto select or cpu.

Not sure about the previous review regarding frame skipping. Sounds more like an issue with the reveiwer's hardware setup (hardware isn't capable of pushing 144+FPS or if it is, the frame timings are too high thus causing noticeable skips). It could also be the particular games or software that he was using. This is by no means the monitor's fault and definitely does not deserve an uninformed 1 star review. I have had this monitor for 2 years now and have had no issues running a buttery smooth 144FPS with a GTX 1080 and an overclocked i7 4790k. The viewing angles are not that great since it is a TN panel but will be perfectly fine as long as you are sitting directly in front of it. A great 144hz monitor.

Frame skipper

Strengths of the product

Nice picture

Weaknesses of the product

Setting the refresh rate to anything over 60Hz caused frame skipping. Couldn't notice any difference in smoothness anywhere. My GTX 780 SC is rated for refresh rates up to 240Hz, so that wasn't the issue.

Additional Comments

Either I got a bad monitor, or this monitor is bad in general.
