Strengths:
Cheap
Firewall built in
Has an SFP port
Does MOST things a commercial router does, like VLANs (except as mentioned below)
Weaknesses:
Doesn't do inter-VLAN routing
No active cooling (don't put it in a closet or cabinet)
Additional Comments:
We bought it for a temporary setup and we've used other EdgeRouters in the past for long term projects, they hold up OK. We needed a router capable of doing VLANs. This seemed to tick all the boxes, it's datasheet says it does VLANs...and it's a router. However after extensive testing and Googling, we found it DOES NOT do INTER-VLAN routing. The ER-4 is the only Ubiquiti EdgeRouter that doesn't do it, and all the of the line-up at the time were on back order. The feature for this is called "VLAN-Aware", and the ER-4 does not have it, and the spec sheet doesn't say it doesn't have it.
