Beautiful laptop, but many optimization issues

Strengths of the product

Beautiful design, vibrant 4K display, great performance under ideal conditions Good Speakers Fast SSD, great for photo editing and 4K videos

Weaknesses of the product

Despite having Thunderbolt 3, there is no USB Power Delivery, and it only has HDMI 1.4. Would have been nice if the screen had HDR as well. I've also noticed considerable coil whine. I struggle to find a video player that can play all my videos smoothly. MPC with MadVR doesn't perform well at all, while VLC still has some stutters. Movies & TV is almost flawless with 4K but has poor codec support and UI. Battery life is 4-5 hours with light usage but I start using something with the GPU it drops considerably. Sometimes the keyboard gives multiple letters when you are typing. Headphone output (Realtek DAC) is subpar with low volume and a loose, muffled bass, and only supports 48 kHz. Avoid using 24 bit, as sometimes running multiple apps causes the audio to crackle and distort.

Additional Comments

Overall, this is a beautiful laptop and you can't go wrong with the 4K screen. Performance under ideal conditions with proper optimization is excellent. It even handles game emulation quite well at resolutions up to 1440p. Thermal throttling isn't as much a problem as optimization issues, in particular related to 4K resolution and video playback or gaming. This could have been a solid laptop if it had been released with a 1080p display and 1440p.

Great laptop for professional use

Strengths of the product

Beautiful 4K Touchscreen display, 6-core CPU paired with a GTX 1050 Ti, and a fast NVME SSD makes this an amazing productivity laptop. The chassis feels quite sturdy and is built well. I use this for design work and the display is very colour accurate (100% Adobe RGB). I do wish it had an extra M.2 slot and non soldered RAM but there's only one other laptop at this price point that has both of those and it's not that big of a deal. The downward firing speakers also sound great.

Weaknesses of the product

One thing I noticed is the trackpad will not move accurately and will jump around for a couple of seconds, it seems to only happen when I have moisture on my fingers, I haven't pin pointed if that's the issue or if it's something else but it doesn't bother me that much as I mostly use the laptop with a mouse. The temperatures when using intensive programs can get pretty high, however I expected that as it's a thin and light with powerful components. Once in a while I can hear slight coil whine but it only comes up when it's working hard and it's not distracting.

Additional Comments

All in all it's a great productivity laptop for the price and I am very happy with it, so far.

Strengths of the product

Great hardware - the only 6-core laptop on the market with a 4K UHD Touchscreen, which is exactly what I was looking for. I wish it were 2 in 1 with a 1060, but one can only ask for so much at a $2,000 price point. It looks beautiful too. This has been a great productivity tool as well. 100% usage of the processor seems to stabilize the clock speed at around 3.3ghz.

Weaknesses of the product

As reviewers have noted, the chassis is slightly flimsy. Not the most precise keyboard feel, but it gets the job done, and still doesn't feel cheap to me. Downward firing speakers are hugely fantastic on a solid surface, but lose their effectiveness on soft surfaces. I wish that I could adjust the fan curve to make it run quieter instead of watching it max out it's thermals and throttle the processor during intense productivity tasks.

Additional Comments

Great laptop for the price. What Asus lacks in fit, it makes up for in finish and price.

Strengths of the product

6 cores and a 4 channel NVMe drive make this a smokin' performer and the 4k 15.6" screen is gorgeous. Also, for my purposes, a 475GB (actual usable size) is just about perfect. It gives me room for all my documents and, more importantly, three or four VMs which are each 60 to 80 GB. My previous machine had half the main drive space so I was constantly hauling around a high performance external drive.

Weaknesses of the product

The one weakness that I noticed with this machine is the trackpad. Instead of being solidly mounted it has a very small amount of play causing it to make a clunking noise when tapped. Also, the trackpad seemed somewhat unresponsive at times. Occasionally I would drag my finger on the trackpad and the cursor would not move. Also, tapping was somewhat inconsistent. Again, somewhat sporadically, I would have to repeat taps and double-taps. For everything I loved about this machine, this one defective piece was enough for me to decide to return it for a refund.

Additional Comments

Gorgeous powerful machine. Just what I was looking for until I started using the trackpad. Unfortunately, that one defective part really ruined the whole thing for me. Also, I had intended to exchange it rather than return it but the two others that they had in the store also had similarly clunky trackpads.
