Replaced a HTPC: 2 steps forward, 1 step back

Strengths of the product

tiny size. ethernet connection. stream games from pc. included controller is decent. compatible with bluetooth playstation controllers. Can install Kodi easily. 4k output with muscle. Cheaper than pc with 90% of the functionality and better performance than all other android tv boxes.

Weaknesses of the product

surround sound output is some strange new standard none of my amps support so no surround sound from netflix, etc. no way to play bluray disks, even with a usb bluray drive. No stand included. android tv has limited app selection compared to android phones. needed to use 3rd party app to get full keyboard support while streaming games. Nvidia gamestream feature on PC sometimes turns itself off and I have to go back and forth between the TV & computer room when that happens which is annoying. Included remote-control buttons fail quickly (mine failed in the first 2 months). Noticeable latency when streaming games makes FPS/fighting games uncompetitive. Nvidia game streaming over the internet isn't very good due to latency of internet connections in Calgary.

Additional Comments

I replaced my HTPC with this. It was a windows box with a gtx 950 but the shield can stream games over the wired ethernet from my main machine and get better graphics. Here's the trick to get the full desktop to stream so you can do anything you'd do on your main computer: open gamestream on your desktop, add a custom program, browse to Google Chrome's EXE file and pick it. Then on the shield go to nvidia streaming, my library, and choose chrome.exe and it'll open chrome but you'll have the full desktop, start menu, etc. You can web browse, do anything. If you close chrome it doesn't end the streaming, giving you a way to use the shield basically as a computer on your tv.

Best android box

Strengths of the product

Very fast and no hangups or crashes in first week. One of the few android boxes certified to play netflix in HD (last time I checked) Looks awesome

Weaknesses of the product

Not as customizable as other android boxes The newer smaller version does NOT have the IR sensor listed in the descrption so you'll need a $30 FLIRC to use a harmony. I can't speak for any of the cheaper IR sensors but FLIRC worked with my 880 for the basic control like the remote that came with it - play/pause/skip does not work but it does the job. No Crave app yet

Additional Comments

You'll want to get a little wifi keyboard w/ touchpad for any web surfing Setting the audio to "limited" dynamic was preferable to me as the default setting got pretty loud when the action kicked in

Basically Flawless

Strengths of the product

The whole package! Nvidia quality.

Weaknesses of the product

There is some limitation on app availability, having said that we have everything we wanted or need on it.

Additional Comments

We have several android based media boxes in the house and this out performs them hands down, we don't have any issues with the remote at all. I am even considering replacing our existing boxes with this unit and as per normal a good recommendation by the guys at Memory Express.

Amazing device

Strengths of the product

Not sure why the previous reviewer had to spend money to get it to read a USB hdd, simply connected and formatted (either for system use or removable storage which is what i chose) There are tons, i mean tons of apps and games that work on this unit, not to mention game streaming (provided you have a pc that has the right specs) also supports Steam Big Picture Mode. Emulators and ROMS that work on any Android system works on this as well. Kodi and Plex are great apps to get installed as well.

Weaknesses of the product

doesn't seem to play DTS-MA

Additional Comments

AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME.

Capable hardware, but lacks refinements.

Strengths of the product

-Exceptional hardware. Basically the same as the Nintendo Switch. -Fast -Plays 4K video HDR with aplomb. -Dolby Atmos -HDMI 2.0B -USB 3.0 -Play PC games on TV with Geforce Now if you have a Geforce in your computer and enough bandwidth to stream it.

Weaknesses of the product

-Android TV. It has extremely small number of apps. -Shield remote doesn't support touch (except for the volume which your palm is always inadvertently adjusting that), motion. -No mouse or pointer on screen as many android boxes have. -The file system out of the box doesn't support Fat32, NTFS, exFat, etc., system that would allow it to read a USB drive or external hard drive. Had to spend $15 to add that functionality. -You can side load apps, but they likely won't work with the remote.

Additional Comments

-First thing, updated it to the latest version of Android 7.1.1. -Amazon Video, only works if you turn off location services and reboot. Afterwards it worked fine. -Netflix worked well. -There's no Cravetv app for Android TV. Side load it from USB, that requires $15. Finally got it on, but the remote doesn't work with the App. -This machine is amazing, but the remote is terrible, and the Limited number of apps really sets it back.
