UHD MakeMKV supported with convoluted firmware patch

Strengths:

Very fast compared to a pioneer external drive. Ripped all of my UHD disks except one. Required a tricky firmware patch following poor instructions on the makemkv forum. It's in-stock locally (Nobody in town carries pioneer UHD bluray drives). Rips music CDs very fast, at about 30x speed. External drive is essential because most nice PC cases lately don't have bay slots for optical drives.

Weaknesses:

Not UHD friendly out of the box, required tricky flashing to rip uhd with makemkv and I almost bricked my drive during the process. I wish the case was completely flat on top so I could stack something on top of it. Very loud when opening and closing it because of the clumsy door on the front. They should have just made the case without the clumsy door. Doesn't handle scratched CDs as well as my pioneer drive.

Additional Comments:

Mine has the BH50N inside, like some others on the makemkv forums report, which is flashable for use with Makemkv. I had to use the all firmware pack from the makemkv forums and used the Asus firmware. The flashing was done on the command line using the makemkv program. After that I've been able to rip my UHD blurays perfectly (aside from 1 disk), making it possible to have my entire UHD bluray library available on my network and watchable without having to juggle discs on a bluray player. Compared to the Pioneer BDR-XD08U which I also own, this drive is faster but required firmware wrangling to work. I'm giving it a "good" rating because it's an external drive which can rip UHD disks very quickly if you research carefully before going through the process.

Excellent

Strengths:

Does everything it says it does on the box. Very quick reads.

Weaknesses:

Enclosure is a little overkill

Additional Comments:

Too many pc's without an optical disk reader. This does the job.

Writes "M" archive BR discs - one and done

Strengths:

I bought this drive to archive some old Super8 home movies I had digitized. No messing around - just dragged the files to the drive icon (using an old Roxio package) and done. I also did a drag and drop of a three year old ISO for a DVD onto a BR archive disc and it works in every optical drive I tried. Reads everything I could throw at it including years old CD-Rs.

Weaknesses:

Eject button seems to need a second push about half the time. And the LED is bright. The shape means nothing will sit on top - probably just as well.

Additional Comments:

Pricey - but worth every penny.

works great

Strengths:

can write bluerays up to triple layer as indicated. it's quiet for the most part. may be easy to service/replace drive as this appears to basically be a 5.25 inch enclosure

Weaknesses:

uses an external power supply. blue power on light can be bothersome if its in line of sight while you are working. activity light on the enclosure is not the same as on the front of the actual drive inside the enclosure. could use an RGBW option for the power indicator light.

Additional Comments:

depsite its weaknesses it works great and does as indicated on the box.

BLOODY BRILLIANT!!

Strengths:

VERY FAST, RIPS BLU-RAYS INTO MY COMPUTER SOOO FAST! A 48 MINUTE EPISODE (1080P) TOOK LESS THAN 5 MINUTES TO RIP.

Weaknesses:

NONE SO FAR.

Additional Comments:

OMG, THIS BLU-RAY DRIVE IS THE BEST THING I HAVE PURCHASED FOR MY COMPUTER LATELY. THIS IS DEFINITELY WORTH THE PRICE AND I HONESTLY WISH I WOULD'VE BOUGHT THIS ONE THE FIRST TIME BEFORE I ORDERED THAT CHEAPER ONE ON AMAZON. THIS ONE IS ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE AND I'M IN LOVE WITH IT! HIGHLY RECOMMEND.
