good backup disk drive

Strengths of the product

Simple design. Good case. Nice solid feel. Available in four colors: black, blue, red, silver. Average speed of 26.3 MB/s on USB 2.0 ports. May be faster with USB 3.0 ports, but don't count on it. No errors in 8 TB of testing with full disk writes and read verify -- 80 hours of activity!

Weaknesses of the product

None. Drive throttles down to 20 MB/s under heavy reads, probably to reduce heat.

Additional Comments

I like disk drives that are just disk drives: no hardware encryption, no virtual CD devices of unwanted software, no AC power adapter, etc. Drives of 2 TB are the biggest you can use with MBR partitions on old Windows XP and others.

Weaknesses of the product

None. Drive throttles down to 20 MB/s under heavy reads, probably to reduce heat. Previous releases of this drive were slow to connect to USB 2.0 ports (up to a minute in some cases); this most recent drive is recognized in under ten seconds (much better).

Additional Comments

The disk drive testing software can be found at http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Hard-Disk-Utils/Erase-Disk.shtml (may need to click on the manual download link).
