Horrible Performance

Submitted on Sunday, April 14, 2019

Strengths of the product

Asus configuration experience is the same across all its devices.

Weaknesses of the product

This router is horribly slow on WiFi. Even wired is not up to the speed it should be. I get that this is 2.4Ghz only, but speeds of 4Mbps download and less than 1 upload are simply not acceptable. I am revering back to the old Apple AirPort Extreme that is starting to show it's age, but at 10+ years old it kicks the RT-N12D1 across the room.

Additional Comments

It is good thing that I only paid $40 for this unit, and I will contact Asus to ask about the performance. I should have noticed that this was a 10/100 router and I can live with it for some things. But there is no excuse for the poor wireless performance.

Strengths of the product

-easy to configure and does wireless things well

Weaknesses of the product

-when connecting devices to the wan ports they will only get 10mb service. I've got three of them and they all act the same way. The device is described as 10/100 but that certainly does not apply to its lan connections. (I proved this by connecting them to a managed switch and the 10mb light came on as well as many file transfer experiments)

Additional Comments

If you want to use this device as a switch, then don't buy it.

Can't beat the price/features.

Strengths of the product

LOTS of power. Using it as a repeater in a welding shop with a steel wall in the way... punches through with no problem. Easy to use interface. PRICE! Catch it on sale and you can't beat the price to performance ratio. Regular price is still worth it in my opinion.

Weaknesses of the product

10/100 switch... but really, unless you're doing LARGE file transfers on the LAN or have a lot of devices connected, the average person will not see a huge difference.

Additional Comments

As a Router, Access Point or Repeater... well worth the money. I'll be getting another one to use as an access point when I get our wired VPN router set up.

Awesome N router

Strengths of the product

Seamless streaming of multiple media types simultaneously to many devices with no issues. Online Web GUI is intuitive enough. RF power is better than average. Has all the expected configuration options for complex home setups.

Weaknesses of the product

Power connector is sensitive. Even gently rotating the device to see the MAC address label trips the device's power. Switch is 10/100 not gigabit, so use an external gigabit switch for local wired connections.

Additional Comments

I have 13 devices connected to this, one is over ethernet. 9 static IP's were set easily. Wirelessly streamed Rdio music streaming service to one device while that device streamed to two Airplay speaker systems concurrently, while running Netflix on TV wirelessly and while Youtube was playing high def on another Laptop. Power levels around the house appeared at least 5dB better than previous router that was having issues. Highly Recommend!

Great repeater/range extender

Strengths of the product

I pick these up for clients offices that want to convert their wired printers into wireless printers. They also double as a WiFi extender which ensures optimal coverage in their office and home environments.

Weaknesses of the product

So far none, Asus has amazing firmware that makes their routers grandma usable.

Additional Comments

Great bang for the buck

Acceptable router for the price

Strengths of the product

N band. Small form factor, low power consumption.

Weaknesses of the product

10/100 Mbps network connection will make this suitable for a home environment at most. Maybe 4 wireless users would manage to easily kill it. Single band is also a drawback.

Additional Comments

I tried 2 of these and I could not get DD-WRT on them. The router is probably good for a home environment. Still, it might be too slow for common use. Maybe look for a higher end model or other manufacturer, although the power consumption beats most of the routers on the market - therefore the slower speeds. But for the money, of you're not aiming for the stars, this will be a deal in the $30 range for sure!!!
