FireWire to connect old camcorder
Phil from Edmonton writes:
- I bought this card to connect an older Sony Camcorder (circa 2000) that had a FireWire / IEEE 1394 connection (Sony calls it i.LINK) to my new Windows 8 PC. The camera itself uses MiniDV tapes, which can be converted to digital video format using various video applications. My older iMac could easily handle it, but PC's don't generally come with FireWire. Using Adobe Premiere Pro CC, I was able to capture the footage very easily (make sure it's set to capture DV, not HDV).
- Relatively easy to install, as far as PCI / PCIe cards go, but I didn't count on having to power it, which the instructions recommend. Fortunately, I had a free power connector. Presumably, this will make it faster or more reliable. This is not a weakness per se, but I would have been ticked had I not had the free connector. There was also a "Ulead VideoStudio" on the back of the box, but it's not clear why -- there was no software in the box. You can download it for free, I guess.
- Does the job very well.
