Powerful CPU - Celeron dual core burstable to 2.9Ghz. Haven't seen this break a sweat during A/V Scans, encoding video, or running Kubernetes images. I upgraded from a "J" series, so the specs on this are killer. The package store for the + (plus) series is broader with more business and home user apps, so it's like using a new NAS on each login. Performance on single NIC is 110MB/sec on write and sometimes up to 117MB/sec on read. Going to pick up a Ubiquiti managed switch from Memex later to team the NIC's so this can FLY. Watch for any specials, I picked the 420+ over Boxing day 2020 on a real steal! Also there's option for 2x M2. Cache (1 x m2=read cache, 2 x m2 = write cache), kinda depends what you're using the NAS for. Mail or web hosting; get 2 x cache. If just using for home shares and plex, don't really need that.
Only came with 2GB of ram. I picked up 4GB DDR4 of equal speed and voltage. It did give a warning after bootup. But it's been running fine for weeks with no complaints. Otherwise, the Synology brand RAM is a bit pricey. No E-sata connection, so you're stuck with 4-bays. I wish I got 8TB's instead of my 4TB. Just means upgrades for the future.
Super happy with this purchase! After migrating all data, I've been playing with the new features like btrfs for replication, and Synology Moments to tag all my photos. Zero lag, always ready to go, and super quick response for uploading/downloading files. Highly recommend the 420+ if you're starting out with a new NAS. Everything is intuitive, quick and well documented.
