Strengths:
plugged it in to the back of a TV and set the optical output to PCM audio.
Connected the RCA to our audio amp and it worked like a charm.
Good audio quality.
No discernable noise during normal usage.
Weaknesses:
When there is no optical input (for example when your TV is turned off, or the TOSLINK cable is unplugged from this unit) there is a very audiable hiss. The unit does not seem to recognize that there is no optical output and is just amplifying noise.
Additional Comments:
Works well for PCM coded streams (MAKE SURE TO SET THE OUTPUT ON THE OPTICAL DEVICE TO PCM).
Has hissing noise when there is no optical input.

Strengths:
It does what it says, an works awfully good! Good way to use optical without the whole big-time setup (amp, 7.1 speakers, etc). I can still use my 2.1 (Logitech Z623) without the expensive upgrade.
Its small size makes it easy to hide behind the computer or the monitor.
Weaknesses:
It uses a (bulky) power adapter.
Additional Comments:
Inexpensive and reliable, I recommend this converter to anyone that still has analog speakers (RCA input) and don't want to spend money on new ones. Watch out for space on your power strip cuz the power adapter is quite big.

Strengths:
Small size
Weaknesses:
Will not convert Dolby Digital or DTS to analog - only SPDIF.
Additional Comments:
I bought this unit for use with my LG TV and wireless headphones and was disappointed when it did not work. Ensure you know what format you want to convert before purchasing.
