- The WD is so far the msot advance media player in the market. It plays any file format and any files files you throw at it wether through external USB hardrive or in the PC using home network. I have hardwired cable to the media player and access files in my 3 years old PC. it playes even my 32 GB movie file smoothy without a glitch. I don't understand those who said they have problem, make sure you have updated to the latest firmware.
- Weaknesses:
- none
- Summary:
Best WDTV I have owned to date

- Strengths:
- -plays everything I have thrown at it
-easy to use, very small learning curve if you are upgrading from previous WDTV players
- Weaknesses:
- -media library brought my wdtv to a standstill so disabled (if you are organized you don't need this feature anyways)
-if you are running more than 1 WDTV regardless of the model you will need to give each one it's own unique name
- Summary:
- How I set up mine.
-hard wired network
-media stored on 8TB of internal hard drives
-non-admin user account set up speciffically for WDTV to log into with username and password
-media hard drives shared with read only access
-each hard drive is has media filed and catagorized in folders and sub folders based on media types / formats / genres / series names / seasons, etc.
-media library disabled
How my WDTV accesses my content
-select files tab
-log into network shares
-select file to play

- Strengths:
- - Great video streaming from network server over ethernet
- wireless streaming worked well too but ethernet is better
- netflix works very well
- Weaknesses:
- external drives/NAS don't seem to work well but haven't tried with latest firmware update 1.7.x
- Summary:
- Great device all in all. I haven't tried a lot of the features such using it for photos and audio but video streaming and netflix work great.
Tried building my own video server using open source and this works much better out of the box.
Make sure you upgrade to latest firmware.
Not that great

- Strengths:
- Small size.
Seems to play everything I have.
Shows up as a media server on your network and if you attach usb storage you can transfer movies etc to the unit.
Works with my DNS 323 server and other computers including mac.
Cheap, but read weaknesses.
- Weaknesses:
- Buggy, Buggy, and Buggy.
Most media studder like crazy. (Wireless and wired!) Some files are Standard Definition and it still can't handle them without chocking. Plays fine if storage device directly plugged in to the usb.
Wireless can't reach far and when I used the ethernet jack it didn't help much, still studdered.
- Summary:
- I really wanted to like this unit. Has the latest firmware at time of review. (03/07/2012) Hopefully new firmware is on its way to solve the issues. Would not buy again.

- Strengths:
- Flexibility, compact size, file formats played. This unit will play wireless the best if you use wireless N. I tried using a "G" router and found that the play quality was erratic. Most wireless devices would be similar IMHO.
- Weaknesses:
- None once wireless N was installed
- Summary:
- Good value and quality device. I would recommend for anyone who has a lot of digitized video files
the best

- Strengths:
- reads every format
- Weaknesses:
- none
- Summary:
- people should learn how to set up proper networks and stop using wireless and expecting to stream hd, running cat to it and streams from nas and all networked computers, thing is awesome, no glitching or anything.
Great Potential But Has Problems

- Strengths:
- -Plays lots of formats
-Plays Netflix Canada
- Weaknesses:
- -Power up brings the user interface to it's knees while it rescans my NAS.
-Indexing doesn't seem very good, every single file on the NAS seems to show up as a 'new' file
-Can't handle indexing my music library, just hangs
-HDMI passthrough is horrible. Just didn't work for some files, but a recent update made them start working. Now however, I get deafening blasts of noise at random places that only stops when I stop and start the playback. Optical output seems OK
- Summary:
- As an all around player I like my old O!play better, I like how you can set skip intervals on that one and skip through the files. HMDI audio passthrough seems better. I would be tempted to try the new one that does Netflix.
Firmware is full of bugs

- A cute little $99 box, instead of using a full blown HTPC
- Weaknesses:
- It's not a great performer...
- Summary:
- I had awful luck with firmware 1.06.04 Jan.12/2012 the unit does not buffer WiFi well and movies stutter and freeze a lot. The filesystem does not refresh from media server of USB stick, so I can't even find my movies sometimes, unless I reboot.
I suggest checking out the WD forums before purchasing one..
Awesome device

- Strengths:
- -The UI is clean, easy on the eyes, and simple enough to navigate.
-Setup was a cinch, and the included wi-fi is nice, although a wired connection is probably better for streaming 1080p.
-Complete set of file format and codec support. Will play pretty much anything you through at it.
-Extremely simple firmware update process.
-Finding media in shared folders on the network is easy, and the fact that the device remembers your last location within the network tree is nice.
- Weaknesses:
- -Slight delay from when you press a button on the remote, to when the device responds. Minimal! Probably measured in microseconds! Can't really think of anything else.
- Summary:
- Definitely worth the 99$ that I paid at Memory Express. Considering purchasing another unit for the basement TV!

- PS to my earlier review... I noticed in the setup menu this device is by default a member of the workgroup called "workgroup". So are my NAS drives, so I added my Windows XP machine to that workgroup (left click My Computer > Properties > Computer Name > Change) and voila, it's now visible on the WD player. My Mac with OS X Lion is visible to the player but generally will not allow it to connect :(
