Brain Dead UI

2/5

Strengths:
Inexpensive, Quiet
Weaknesses:
Utterly BRAIN DEAD user interface. Slow slow slow. Way too much 'flash' and animation. Bad formatting throughout UI. Have to pan and scan virtually every info window to see data. Won't take a 3TB drive unless you update the firmware. Firmware file MUST reside on a 'local' drive, not USB stick or network or it just hangs, without any error message.
Summary:
3TB NOT ready for prime time! It may be faster than the 323 for network I/O. But it took 10x longer to set up. UI SUCKS! You MUST have 2.02 firmware to get a 3TB drive to be recognized. I am not sure I trust this box because disk scans repeatedly crash. If I had not used up my 7 day return window fighting to get the 3TB drives to format/scan I would be returning it. I now have a couple of 2TB in it, and at least THEY format/scan ok.

STILL not ready for 3 TB drives

Strengths:
Faster processor than the 323, but it NEEDS it for the overloaded web GUI. S.M.A.R.T monitoring tool and drive diagnostics and email alerts. Compact. Lightweight plastic case. Fan blows directly on drives, but they still run hot. Standard 12V @ 4A power brick so easier to replace if it fails. 1.8 mm barrel plug.
Weaknesses:
Overly graphical web interface is SLOWWWW and a PITA to navigate. What was wrong with the old, FAST, web interface? Cannot use their 'configurator' program on Linux or Mac so you MUST have a DHCP server running to configure it. No default IP address assumed as on older boxes. NOT ready for 3 TB drives, even with 2.02 firmware. Falils to show 3TB drives in drive status. Unable to successfully run a drive scan on 3TB drives. You MUST put the updater file on a LOCAL hard drive. NO Netwrk drive
Summary:
SLOOOWW web GUI. STILL flakey firmware. 2.02 Great box for 2TB drives on WINDOWS. 2TB+ does NOT work correctly. Configuring on Mac/Linux requires a DHCP server or a Windows box running their setup program. Nonstandard Javascript fails on common Linux browsers. Beware: The power button is NOT under the USB flap. It's hidden under the protective plastic wrap and you won't see it if you leave the plastic on.

Fantastic unit, lots of customization

Strengths:
(*) Small footprint, simple design
(*) Low power consumption
(*) Extremely customizable - can run official debian squeeze or fun_plugs, but even the default configuration is very feature-rich
(*) Basically a small Linux box
(*) Inexpensive
(*) Gbit ethernet - about 25 MB/s write and 30 MB/s read over LAN (Samba share from Windows 7 laptop over gigabit ether as well)
(*) Beta Firmware update supposedly supports 3 TB drives
Weaknesses:
(*) Idle temperature a bit high (43-46 deg C in a 21 deg C room); hard drives are 8 degrees cooler
(*) Fan runs more than I'd like, even when the box is idle (because of the high idle temps)
Summary:
Excellent product! If you can do it in Linux, you can probably do it on this box. Transfer speeds are very reasonable for a low powered device. The case design isn't perfect - fan runs more than I'd like it to. It's not overly loud, but s noticeable. Also the fan doesn't seem to be very efficient at dissipating the heat. This is more than made up for by the fact that you can do SO much. Google "dns323 fun_plug" for customization tips. Still gets 5/5 from me for being so awesome.

Better than its little brother

Strengths:
Faster than the DNS-323. This unit was giving me about 25-30MB/s read and 14-18MB/s write. Not quite full USB2 speed so still a tad slow as compared other options. Very similar to the 323 but a little faster..
Weaknesses:
A tad slow. Still nowhere near true Gigabit speed.
Summary:
When I tried this NAS t wasn't bad but still only half of gigabit speed which seems to be fast in this price category. Other than that it was very much like it's brother (DNS-323). Setup worked without any problems. Pretty average software. For the price it's a pretty good choice.
