OC to 4.5ghz and stable. Was on sale for about $300.
Weaknesses:
Can't OC to 10ghz?
Summary:
About the best bang for the buck proc currently as of December 2011. I recommend this product.

Strong and quiet

Strengths:
Low power, high clock rate for single thread apps. Four processors.
Weaknesses:
Price
Summary:
Upgraded my AMD 2.5Ghz quad core to this one. 1: 50 Watts rather than 130Watts 2: Extra 50-80% improvement in speed 3: Easy overclock, and when you do, it doesn't disable power savings unlike the AMD rig did Overall, this is a great processor, but works slower than I thought it would for the price. Still get more value for dollars with AMD, but you pay for it in the end with the electricity bill, so I am happy with Intel.

Excellent for DAW use

Strengths:
Arithmetic muscle Good 2d and decent 3d performance.
Weaknesses:
None.
Summary:
I use for DAW use only. No gaming. This unit crunches 96khz(16-24 tracks or more) with more than enough plugins (sonnox eq's, altiverb6 plates, fft analyzer, etc), at 2 ms latency on everything(in samplitude X), 32 bit communication...and it's only at 2% dsp. basically yawning and still in powersaving mode! If you only wanna work in 96khz w/plugins....at low latency(2-3ms-mixer and playback/record), fast, responsive sound and 'lots' of room to move. This unit gives it to you.

Core i7 Goodness

Strengths:
-It's Intel
-Unlocked
-Easy Overclocks
-Hyperthreading
Weaknesses:
-Not a Core i8.
Summary:
Moved from a very good Core i5 750 processor because I missed hyperthreading in my CAD and 3D animation apps. Of course when upgrading the CPU the mobo had to be upgraded as well so I chose the ASUS P8Z68-V Pro board. This combination makes for great overclocks and solid performance. Went from 3.4 stock to 4.43 GHz with a simple click of a button. Cooling is provided by a Corsair H50. It could go higher with some tweaking but I feel it's not necessary. Solid.

Awesome

Strengths:
-Man this puppy is powerful and fast
-Yay! I can have 20 apps going at once and not even notice it!
-Pretty hard for me to strain it in real-world situations.
-Never gets hot, even with stock cooler and overclocked
-Intel video is surprisingly capable for what it is - does better than an nVidia 8500 GT card I bought a few years ago
Weaknesses:
-Integrated video is a pansy if you're going to play *modern* 3d games on it, but if you're just using desktop apps (even on dual monitors), it'd be more than enough.
Summary:
I overclocked using the Asus utilities (P8Z68 - V mobo) and got to 4.4 GHz without a hitch on stock cooler.

Stopped there since I'm probably not going to notice a few hundred MHz more, but I could have probably grabbed a fair bit more MHz I think since everything's cool and stable.

Amazing chip but limited to 16GB of RAM

Strengths:
Wickedly fast and amazing value!
Weaknesses:
If you need a huge amount of RAM for your applications, the 16GB limitation will bottleneck you sooner than the i7 960 or 980's 24GB.
Summary:
I would immediately update to this chip but I'm also looking into upgrading my software to the point where I need all the RAM I can get my hands on. I think I'll be better off waiting for the next generation because I'll be able to fill up 16GB too easily.

Glad I got this

Wicked fast

Cool
Weaknesses:
Doesn't cut my lawn? Maybe it does, haven't tried that yet...
Summary:
Just a monster CPU. Loaded it up at my mobo's 4.8 GHz setting and it barely hit 50C. Happy I went with this over the 2500K...I think hyperthreading and Quicksync are ways of the future.

still investigating, but this will probably be the chip I get. I am most interested that this chip has the horsepower, yet stays cool. Not sure if I will make use of the overclock or not, but less heat/power-draw just -has- to be a winner in the long run.

great article at Anandtech: http://www.anandtech.com/show/4083/the-sandy-bridge-review-intel-core-i7-2600k-i5-2500k-core-i3-2100-tested/2
this page explains the naming convention. the 'K' does not mean '1000', in this case it is Intel's marker for meaning that the clock is fully unlocked. Read the article for the full explanation (it really helped me sort out all the different versions of the chip available!)
