Top NAS option for home or small office environment

- Strengths:
- Low-maintenance storage solution that isVery a no-brainer to set up.
Very flexible storage capability that will accept virtually any drive you try throwing into it. No matching of brands, speeds, capacities required. No need to fill all bays to get started
Constantly monitors the status of your drives
Full protection against either one or two faulty drives. The latter requires more backup space, however.
Replace a smaller drive with as big as you can afford without shutting down the system.
- Weaknesses:
- Slow to recover if a disk does dies. You maintain access to data, but the unit does slow down during the recovery process,
The unit streams 1080p video across ethernet flawlessly and read rates are certainly acceptable; that's about all one can say for the speed aspect. Writes are not fast; my wish list #1 item is to be able to get more speed on my gigabit network. Set your backups for late/night early/morn and move your HD vids onto your NAS when the network is quiet. Speed is hardly an issue
- Summary:
- I'm going to give the Drobo FS a 5 out of five, just to try to compensate for some of these whiners and complainers who are never happy unless their hardware is raw -- unpretty and unreliable. "Constant contact with tech support during set-up" is utter twaddle. Random corruption? Never seen any in my two years of running two devices
In reality, I think this Drobo performs to a 4/5. losing a star for the long recovery times and at least a bit of a yearning for faster speeds
Great NAS, Simple to set up

- Strengths:
- Hot swappable drives for expansion
HDD Capacity/model/manufacturer dont need to be the same
Fast Enough to stream HD movies
Use of green drives keeps heat, noise and COST down
Incredibly simple set up
Very Simple visual warnings on Unit
Apps make drobo usable for versitile Applications
- Weaknesses:
- Transfer speed short of stellar
Can not manage Simply Accounting Connection Manager
- Summary:
- I first saw a Drobo working as a computer tech, it was shown to me and I thought the idea of an easily expandable, hot-swappable unit that required no maintenance was fantastic! I have 14 Drobo's attached to servers I maintain as primary back ups, as well as a HDD in a toaster for absolutely crucial data, but have fortunately never needed it. I also have a Drobo 8 Bay iSCSI connected as a SAN to a main server running 3 virtual servers, where the drobo is the primary data placement, works great!
Not Sure

- Strengths:
- Great concept
- Weaknesses:
- Lots of headaches. Lots of communications with Tech Support right out of the box just to get it working. Backups with Apple Time Machine started off ok, but over time and as total backups on the drive increased, speed was slow. A brand new 350GB backup on a new partition started at 25GB/hr and then slowed down to half that after backing up 200GB. Still waiting to hear back from Tech Support
- Summary:
- Not doing what it promises to do and very frustrating. I regret having purchased it.
Devoted a Blog to how terrible it is

Works like a charm

- Strengths:
- Works as advertised
Extremely easy to setup and use
Saved my bacon when other external drives started failing after 2.5 years.
- Weaknesses:
- if the drobo unit fails your data is safe, but ONLY if you put the drives in a new drobo unit. Format not recognized by anything else. Not sure if this is a weakness, or just a commitment you have to make for all the features and benefits.
- Summary:
- It's a commitment to a proprietary format, but at the end of the day it does what it's supposed to.
Drobo FS just saved me.

- Strengths:
- Network attached storage, File Sharing, protected backup and centralized file structures.
- Weaknesses:
- when one of my 3 2TB drives crashed it took over 14 hours to return to a safe state.
- Summary:
- i had a drive in my Drobo crash today. Drobo did exactly what it was supposed to do and it protected my data, i brought the drive in to be replaced under warranty and all of my files are safe. mind = blown by Beyond RAID and Drobo.
Nice option for NAS

- Strengths:
- - No configuration of the drives is needed, just put them in the drive bay, the Drobo handles the rest
- The online drive space calculator tool makes it very easy to see how much space you will have available based on the size of drives you plan to put in it, after redundancy is factored in.
- Can configure email alerts/shares/users/static IP etc through Drobo Dashboard.
- Can access the shares by browsing to the hostname/IP. Does not require the dashboard.
- Weaknesses:
- - The Drobo Dashboard only seems to be able to connect to the Drobo unit by using auto discover on the network, doesn't appear to be able to force the software to connect to the IP of the device directly.
- No web interface to manage the device.
- Seems to be fairly finicky when there are changes in the network.
- The built in share mounting utility isn't too reliable.
- Summary:
- When I first installed the Drobo Dashboard on my Win 7 box, the software couldn't detect any Drobo device. I later found that the Dashboard installer did not make all the necessary firewall exceptions on the Win 7 firewall.
I like the Drobo, but there are a few minor annoyances that create kind of a headache, especially if your network changes or introduce new computers that may need to manage the device.
