Quick and easy to set up

Strengths:
Once configured, I plugged it in to my iMac and haven't turned it off since. Mac OS just automatically does its thing with Time Machine and I don't have to worry about anything. It's not aluminum but it looks like it. Fits in with Apple's industrial design. There's a visual indicator at the front that shows how much space is left and whether it is copying something.
Weaknesses:
Requires a small utility to be installed to configure the unit and it will always sit in my menu bar when the unit is plugged in. Doesn't bother me though. I haven't had to replace any HDDs yet but I would imagine it might be a pain.
Summary:
Simple, sleek, and it just works if you're using it with your Mac for Time Machine.

Good for 2 years so far

Strengths:
Easy to use. Lots of storage. Quiet, as long as it's not sitting beside you. Dependable. Fast. RAID. Many connection options. I'm suing FW 800 which is certainly fast enough.
Weaknesses:
Cannot use drives when rebuilding RAID 1 after drive replacement. This hasn't happened yet and may never. Replacing 1TB drives with larger drives maybe not straight-forward.
Summary:
I've been happy with mine. Using it in RAID 1 to backup my macbook pro.

Useful product (20 days of use)

Strengths:
* Large backup capacity, 2 TB
* RAID 0 and RAID 1
* Firewire 400 and 800 support with wires included
* USB 2 standard connection to other computers
Weaknesses:
* Requires WD driver to be installed to configure the drive
* Slow to start up again after going into power save (~10 s)
* May have issue where there is an I/O error and the drive does not come out of sleep but is resolved by rebooting the computer
* Plastic top is not perfectly secured to the case
Summary:
Will purchase this product again

Win7 Support is WEAK, especially w/ eSATA

3/5

Keith from Calgary writes:
Strengths:
Price-per-Gigabyte, multi connection format
Weaknesses:
Windows documentation, software. No eSATA software support
Summary:
In Windows7 The RAID configuration/monitoring software won't work using eSATA - only USB or Firewire, so first you have to hook up using one of the latter methods, initialize/re-format/map the drive, and then switch to eSATA. You can't see the RAID status of the drive using eSATA. The WD RAID management software is flaky - the icon would not show up in the system tray until I launched the diagnostic software.

Strengths:
Big storage space
eSATA
Ability to use RAID 1 or 0
Weaknesses:
Often takes about 10 seconds for the drive to spin up when you need to access it. Sometimes even spins down while in the middle of a movie, so it pauses until it spins up again.
Summary:
Okay I guess, does what it should for the most part.

Western Digital 2TB My Book Studio Edition II External HDD

Kate from Calgary, AB writes:
Strengths:
2 TB of memory
Weaknesses:
Not as easy to get working with Mac as advertised.
Summary:
One you make your first call to Western Digital you are on the clock, so you better be serious about devoting the time to get this to work. It's backing up manually just like it aught to only getting it to work like Time Machine hasn't happened yet and I have owned it for a month.
