Don't risk it

Strengths:
Worked fine for 2.4 years
Weaknesses:
Died on a Friday -- gave no notice
Summary:
This drive was fine for just over 2 years, then died. I had no notice. All of a sudden my computer wouldn't boot and the drive would spin and click. I have seven of these drives (320, 500, 1TBx2 and 1.5TBx2) and I am worried about the six that still seem to be working -- particularly the two that are in my NAS. Supposedly when I bought this drive Seagate had the 'click of death' problem fixed with new firmware which I explicitly asked about at MemoryExpress before buying this drive. I guess

Third replacement

Strengths:
Fast, Quiet
Weaknesses:
Drive's keep failing
Summary:
There seems to be a quality issue with these Segate's. This is now the third replacement in my (thank goodness) mirrored home PC.

Strengths:
Lots of space
Quiet
Weaknesses:
After 6-12 months, hard disk failure is possible
Summary:
This hard drive lasted me a good 14 months, but then it started to click and grind. Had a weird blue screen when it started, and it's been clicking and my computer has been loosing speed ever since.

IPR is your friend

K from Calgary writes:
Strengths:
Fast access and runs cool out of the box (bag?). Great choice for general purpose at home use. The IPR on it is cheaper than a burger combo at most fast food joints, and in my case I got same day replacement of faulty drives.
Weaknesses:
There still seems to be a problem with drive failure, as I bought 3 and had 2 of them begin to show signs of failure fairly quickly. See my summary for the details of that. This weakness is almost entirely offset by Memory Express's excellent in-store service for IPR (NW Calgary location).
Summary:
Bought one in Nov during the pre-pre-boxing day sales event, liked it so much that in Feb I bought 2 more. Unfortunately the November drive had over 2000 bad sectors by Feb, and one of the Feb drives showed a bad sector within the first week of purchase.

The bottom line here is: if you buy these or any low cost SATA drives from Memory Express, get the IPR. Test your drives early with HD Sentinel or something similar and if the drive shows bad sectors, they will replace it for you.

Crashed and Burned

Strengths:
Competitive Price and Features
Weaknesses:
Crashes, Unrealiable
Summary:
I bought this drive in December 2009. One year (+1 month) later in January 2011 the drive started to make this clicking noise and then it was done.

My two 320 GB (purchase in 2007) and one 500 GB (purchase in 2008) are still going strong but after this experience I am switching to another brand. I used to trust nothing but Seagate drives for well over a decade. Never again! I think their quality is going downhill.

Started failing in less than a month

Boris from Windsor writes:
Strengths:
Low price, quiet, initially fast
Weaknesses:
Lots of bad sectors, performance decline
Summary:
Initially, everything was fine. Then I found some unreadable sectors in recently written files, but after wiping the files everything seemed fine again. After a few more days I found more unreadable sectors, and the reallocated sector count quickly increased to over 1500. Performance noticeably decreased, in one area dropping to 10 MB/s. I'm giving it two stars because it didn't die completely and become inaccessible.

Strengths:
Quiet
Lots of capacity
Weaknesses:
1 of 2 drives failed within a week of purchase (was part of a RAID 1 and lightly used)
Summary:
Likely won't buy Seagate again, going back to Western Digital which have rarely failed me.

Weaknesses:
3 year warranty.
Summary:
I have a bunch of these Seagate ST31000528AS drives. I have NOT had problems with any of them, in RAID arrays, standalone, and with both heavy and light use. Of course, I always backup to avoid catastrophe.

Great value for the money.
