Media slave from Calgary writes:
Strengths:
Drive extender, easy to add drives and replace failed drives.
Files can be duplicated, so very safe
Back up and restore home puters
Media streaming, Itunes, home movies, pics, flac music to tvs through apple TV
Weaknesses:
Trying to make it do things outside what it is for, can lead to problems for some.
Summary:
I had some spare parts lying around. I heard about the home server and was trying to set up a media network at home. I know have 4 t of movies/ personal files on this setup. I have lost 3 drives since i put it together and have not lost a file yet.

The Windows Home Server Experience

4/5

Minh from Calgary writes:
Strengths:
- Low hardware requirements
- Storage pool concept made adding drives simple
- Free Plug ins such as WebGuide allow the ability to stream videos/music over the internet
- XB360 can easily stream videos stored on the WHS to my HomeTheatre
- Easy backup and restore of any machine on the network
Weaknesses:
- Doing Windows server functions outside of the WHS console break things.
- Does not create backups of the system's backups.
- Had problems getting connector software to work and spent 3 hours on the WHS forums to figure out the problem.
- The user limit should be increased for remote users
Summary:
Overall, once it was setup on an old computer I had, it ran like a champ. Highly recommend this for anyone lazy who doesn't want to go through the setting up Windows Server and Dynamic DNS for themselves or for people in IT who constantly have friends that ask them to format/reload their computer.
