Way better than what I was thinking

- Strengths:
- Very easy to setup and install the hard drives in it
Way smaller than what it looks like in the pictures
eSATA and it's great speed (it comes with a SATA-eSATA adapter bracket)
Very nice aluminum case
RAID1 and JBOD
- Weaknesses:
- Fan noise
A little bit pricey
- Summary:
- I had one of those cheap slow Western Digital My Book World Edition II - 2 TB (2 x 1 TB) external hard drives that also comes with a driver that doesn't even work with windows 7. Because of all these issues and some other issues, I decided to buy one of these and add both HDDs from that WD to it. I could not come up with a better plan. I backed up 800GB in less than 3.5hrs (compared to 13hrs for WD). 4 stars, only because of the fan noise.
Good, but fan noise

- Strengths:
- Works well in RAID 1, eSata as fast as internal drive. No software included, but SteelVine Manager works with it PLUS WORKS WITH eSATA CONNECTION that a lot of monitoring software does not.
- Weaknesses:
- Fan noise, but if warranty not a concern and you have a soldering iron, add a 120 Ohm resister in-line on the fan wire and it quiets down nicely but still cools well.
- Summary:
- Software at http://staging.siliconimage.com/support/downloadresults.aspx?pid=105
I would give 5 stars if fan quieter and softwae included.

- Strengths:
- As fast as a USB external HDD
After a few format cycles, it seems to be OK
- Weaknesses:
- Has Dip switches and a reset button to configure RAID. Haven't seen that since 1990. Requires the DIP switch and reset button to operate while the power is on but requires the compartment to be open to access switch.
Documentation was a little skinny on mounting the drives and the DIP switch operation.
Requires the OS to format the drives, locked up twice on a drive format.
- Summary:
- Used as backup to a server, once configured and the drives were formatted, it was OK.
Once done, it is faster then my Dlink DNS-323 by way more hassle.
Well designed and sturdy

- Strengths:
- No silly wires to plug into the lights at the front of the case. It's just two pieces- shell and slide-out tray. Drives slide into sockets on rails and screw in perfectly.
- Weaknesses:
- None that I can see.
- Summary:
Better than Dlink NAS?

- Strengths:
- Simpler operation than a NAS box.
Can use faster eSata and keeps USB 2.0
Support JBOD, RAID 0 and RAID 1
- Weaknesses:
- Require host PC
Has no NAS
- Summary:
- Can easily extend a file server to 1.5 TB or 3 TB without having to configure a NAS box. Well built.
