Install DD-WRT

3/5

Strengths:
The hardwire connections to the router works good.
Weaknesses:
Wireless signal seems to drop all the time or has inconsistent performance
Summary:
Was really close to throwing this router out, then I installed DD-WRT firmware and the router now works excellent. No more signal loss, immediate wireless connections. If you want a cheap cheap router that performs well with 3rd party firmware, i would recommend this router.

Definitely Use DD-WRT

Strengths:
Relatively cheap Easy to setup Super Easy to install DD-WRT
Weaknesses:
Factory Firmware drops wireless connections Only 4MB of space, meaning if you install dd-wrt you won't get access to the NAS features natively
Summary:
Bought this router to replace my WRT-54G wireless and not more than a few months the wireless connections kept on dropping. If you buy the E3 series, installing DD-WRT (an alternative firmware) is super easy and adds a bunch of features (e.g. increasing wireless strength, VPN features, etc.) You can even set up a coffee shop wifi service (where a webpage always opens up). I was about to throw the router away but after installing dd-wrt, I'll be keeping it for a while

high expectations need not apply

Strengths:
decent range, good prioritizing for network traffic
Weaknesses:
Cannot handle more then 3 devices at one time without flaking out Connecting with an Iphone causes it to crash Needs to be rebooted regularly with high network use (over heating?) general realibilty starts to plumet over time
Summary:
if you only have 2 devices on the wireless this thing is for you. but In the modern home its a source of fustration, with 2 cell phones, 2 Xboxes and a computer it has to be restarted regularly. if more then 3 devices try to get signal it losses it's ability to optimize traffic for priorty aplications. It has come down in price since I purchased it for about $100, but thats because they have not updated it in a long time, it just can't keep up. for some reason it will not work with any Iphone

Very good N router for the price

Strengths:
Can be converted to DD-WRT firmware
Weaknesses:
None that I've found
Summary:
I have a couple and converted them to DD-WRT firmware. Gives me PPTP VPN at the fraction of the cost of other routers with that feature.

Save yourself the trouble

Strengths:
Easy set up
Inexpensive
Weaknesses:
Worked fine for about 6 months. Now it constantly drops the wireless signal and has to be reset (unplugged) twice per day. It cant hold a connection to any of my wireless devices (blackberries, wii, tablet, netbook) for longer than 4 or 5 hrs.

DHCP/IP reservation screen has a bug where it wont accept reservations for devices with certain MAC addresses.
Summary:
Its become such a pain that its going in the trash. I wont be buying another d-link product.

Works perfect after firmware update

Summary:
Had this for about a year, and didn't use WiFi much. Son got an iTouch and we were rebooting the router daily to reconnect. Investigated and did the firmware update. Solid performance now.

Lasted less that 8 months

was easy to set up and forward ports, etc
Weaknesses:
Had to reboot it once an month. Iphone really didnt like it too much - hence the reboot.

Packed it in in about 8 month!
Summary:
Never again with D LInk

Strengths:
Wired ports are reliable and stable
Easy to setup
Range is great
Weaknesses:
Wireless N is reliable and relatively quick
Wireless G is a nightmare and constantly drops
Forget about hooking up Wireless B devices!
No 1GB interfaces on LAN
Summary:
For the price, this unit is just alright. If you are looking for reliable wireless (especially for older B/G series) shop around. For $30 more, you can get something more stable.

Not the router for me.

Strengths:
Setup was easy, but why shouldn't it be, You just have to know what you're doing. Range seemed o.k. and it was reasonably priced.
Weaknesses:
This router seemed to constantly reboot. Signal lost every 10 or 15 minutes. I thought for a while it was my laptop until I read reviews where users were having the same trouble. I took it back and the place I bought it refunded my money. I found a Dlink DI-524 at a garage sale and am using it until I find something else.
Summary:
No one needs to deal with a router that looses it's signal as much as this router did. I didn't update the firmware, I figured why should I straight out of the box and what if this new router bricks on me? Maybe I should have, but didn't.

Absolute garbage

Strengths:
it has none
Weaknesses:
drops wireless connections on my netbook every 5-10 mins, drops wireless connection on my blackberry bold 9700 30 seconds after connecting,
Summary:
bought this yesterday, returning it tomorrow, too much hassle, firmware is completely up to date and it still works very poorly. and it actually dropped connection again before i had a chance to post this review.
