Trent from Calgary writes:
Strengths:
- Performance is acceptable 28 MB/s write 38MB/s read
- Reliable
- Price
Weaknesses:
- Fan is a little noisy
- Slow on reboot if its checking the file system
Summary:
If your looking for a nas to serve files in your home this works really well. I have been able to watch two 1080p HD streams at the same time from this box with no issues.

Unreliable unit

Concerning

Jason from Calgary writes:
Strengths:
-Worked incredibly well for backups
-Reporting system to announce major log events to your email was incredibly usefull
-Ability to swap out failed drives was great
Weaknesses:
-Web interface continually crashed, causing major issues as it was remotely administered
-Sycning RAID disks on reboot can take hours, leaving users in a bind
-Major problem using this over a mixed network: Gigabit and 100MBPS. The gigabit connections worked well but the 100MBPS connections dropped to 0.05% throughput. IE: A 100MB file would take 15-20 seconds over regular 100MBPS connection was taking over 45 min to transfer. This was only a problem with the ReadyNAS, not any other servers.
Summary:
Our ReadyNAS worked for about 2 years, continually crashed the web GUI. FInally one day the NAS crashed, and would not boot back up. It would report "Booting" for days and days.

Replacing this fileserver and not buying another one.

It did work really well pushing backups to our backup server however.

NV+ is a decent reliable unit

Strengths:
I have had good success over 3 years with this unit. No major failures and only one situation where it became inaccessible but this was fixed by a reboot. The configuration options are extensive and easy to manage via the web interface. Have never had a problem with the web interface. Have never had a problem installing firmware updates. Good support on readynas forums.

Provides web access, ftp access, webdav access etc so it is extremely flexible in terms of how you use the box.
Weaknesses:
The unit is slow, slow, slow. It really needs a faster processor. I installed additional memory but didn't notice an improvement. I found the onboard processor to be too slow to run the music server (slim center)

Despite the claims, USB drives attached to the ReadyNAS and shared out to the network are basically non-functional and there has been no fix for this problem. Access is so slow that it is completely unworkable to use USB drives via the ReadyNAS so don't bother.
Summary:
All in all, this is a very flexible box with a lot of features that simply are not available in competing products. It is slow but I found it very reliable. At the current price point, it is worthwhile.

If you want speed, go for the newer NVX or the ReadyNAS Pro which are substantially more powerful and much faster.

WORST NAS - EVER

Andrew from Calgary writes:
Strengths:
Plugged drives in and it came up fairly easily ... initially. Beware after that.
Weaknesses:
- processor is too small to handle normal network traffic - performance is 1/2 that of a decent NAS
- shares limited to 2 TB
- web interface crashes on a REGULAR basis, leaving you in a real pickle as you're not sure if the box will come back up after a reboot (sometimes yes, sometimes no)
- backup synching software doesn't work. NAS ran for a solid week trying to synch two exact same units, web interface crashed, performance was snail-like and shares stopped being accessible.
Summary:
- memory is too small - can be upgraded at additional cost, with variable success
- RAID fails to synch or rebuild properly - even after IPR with a brand new box
- firmware flashing sometimes works, sometimes not
- documentation of drive light flashing codes is very poor

- DO NOT TRUST THIS BOX WITH ANY IMPORTANT DATA - went through three of them and they are slow and UNRELIABLE

versatile and easy to use

Strengths:
can use a mix of brands and sizes of drives.
Will do windoze and NFS and Apple shares
Will do automated backups
Works well with UPSs
Can be used to attach USB drives to the network.
Weaknesses:
Power supply
Summary:
I have owned two of these and they have both blown power supplies. With a little creativity, replacement power supplies can be found and made to work. Other than that, this unit provides safe, convenient and reasonably quick network storage.
