Strengths:
good idea, easy to carry,
Weaknesses:
tried 6 hard drives, only regonized one drive, got a replacement, even worse..
Summary:
try something else. Nexstar Vantec HD dock works good, but no IDE.

Great idea...works for me.

Strengths:
Easy to use Small enough for any toolkit Works as advertised.
Weaknesses:
Light power block gives a feeling of flimsiness. No instructions with the device Power block gets warm (not hot). Considering the reviews from other users, I will not leave this device unattended. Power block says it is made in CHIAN.
Summary:
The device has worked for me on about 35 drives since I bought it 2 weeks ago. I have had no trouble whatsoever. Some of these drives are from 1999-2000. I have managed to retrieve music, documents, email archives etc. with no issue. It does what it is supposed to do so I give it 5/5. If you are having trouble, read Preston's post on how to use it. Thanks very much, Preston. I do agree though that the power cord should be replaced if it is 30awg wire. Use a heavier duty power cord.

The concept is excellent....
Weaknesses:
Does not work at all...
Summary:
I purchased this adapter because I have multiple 2.5" & 3.5" drives that I need to swap between laptops & PCs. I was planning to use this adapter to clone drives and do some minor data backups.
- The Adapter would not work on either 2.5" SATA or 3.5" SATA.
- No drivers or support from Bytecc website
- When i connected my 2.5" drive, it wouldn't spin properly, or power up properly...

Overall this was a waste of time. I like the concept and I hope to find one that actually works. However this

Be careful!!

Strengths:
Great when this unit works. Plug in the power supply, plug in the usb to your computer and it easily mounts.
Weaknesses:
After a few weeks of use I plugged in a hard drive and heard crackling sounds like a campfire. I then started seeing smoke appear. I quickly unplugged it and luckily nothing was damaged, however if I went for a coffee or something the building would be burnt down!
Summary:
Be very cautious with this device as I have seen other reviewers say both good and bad things.

Handy Hazard

Strengths:
handy in a pinch
Quick and easy to use
Weaknesses:
Not that portable
Perceived Electrical hazard
Summary:
i love this device (it's handy, quick to set up, and on notebook hard drives, uses USB power instead of the power adapter), and I hate it (this has fried more than one 3.5" hard drive).
Use it strictly for notebook hard drives, consider something safer for 3.5" hard drives... Also works well with 5.25" cd/DVD rom drives.

Don't use with Laptop Drive

Strengths:
- Very simple and convenient for recovering data from SATA and IDE drives, or for recycling old HDs into large USB drives.
Weaknesses:
- Nuked two of my SATA laptop drives before I figured out the adapter was killing them.
Summary:
For emergency use only...

I received compensation from Bytecc

Burned customer from Toronto writes:
Strengths:
none
Weaknesses:
Adapter caused two drives to malfunction
Summary:
The adapter worked some of the time. One day a drive would not mount so I tried another. While waiting for it to mount, I went away.
When I returned I found smoke rising from the controller card of the drive.

I managed to get Bytecc to compensate me through insurance company for the cost of the two drives and adapter.

DON'T BUY!

Strengths:
works with everything
can get smart data right threw it with a new enough smartmontools, might need svn verson
has saved 2 computers from loosinf all the data now
Weaknesses:
I am not to fond of the soft plastic used for the molex connecters on the drivemate and it's power brick, I pluged the power coard into an old cd drive upsidedown once and didn't realize it untill I coocked the drive ooooops
the ac power coard actuley broke on me, the skin on it came away from the wall end, so I just used an old power coard I had liying around
Summary:
the wiers on the power pack could have been better but that said I have had no problems with this device or the powerpack if you don't count the crummy power cable.

this thing has allowed me to save data from diying harddrives more then once and with an aprapropreate version of smartmontools it can be a great diagnostic tool, just be carefull with the power coard and you will be fine

Good, but not without its short-comings

Strengths:
- Definitely handy to have around
- Will work on virtually any IDE/SATA drive you toss at it
- USB 2.0 means convenient, relatively quick transfer speeds
Weaknesses:
- IDE Optical Drives: Nearly impossible to fit the power adapter and IDE block in at once. Takes some wiggling for sure.
- Feels a bit cheap
- A bit dicey booting from optical drives connected to it. Works well some times, not so well other times.
Summary:
I luckily didn't (haven't) had any issues with heat from the adapters or cords, but it sounds like I'm lucky in that respect. It's pretty cheap considering how often this comes in handy (a lot more than you'd think).

Personally, I think that the pros outweigh the cons with this product. It isn't perfect, but it's pretty cheap, and works well enough to confide in in a pinch.
