- Strengths:
- Upgradeable Memory
Upgradeable Antennas
Open Source Firmwares
- Weaknesses:
- 5GHZ (Dual Band)
Could use more memory
- Summary:
- When I started my new job, we had four of these routers and a bunch of Cisco devices. The first thing I did was replace all Cisco devices with WRT54G routers. And it has been a blessing. The network has grown to 20+ routers. Thanks to OpenWRT, I haven't had to reboot a single router in over two year. OpenWRT is not for everyone but it is the most stable firmware out there and it keeps getting better with every new version.
At home I'm more incliend to use Toastman Moded TomatoUSB rather than the original Tomato firmware. Why? Toastman mod has more features.
My setup:
-Increased Transmit Power from 43mW to 150mW
-Overclocked from 200mhz to 250mhz (Safe)
-Running two VPNs: PPTPd Server & OpenVPN Server
-Running FTP Server & Samba File Sharing for NAS
-Running Telnet and SSH Demon for Remote Access
-PPPoE internet with Static DNS and DDNS
-Wireless G (only) w/ Filter and Static DHCP
-Bandwidth monitoring (CIFS1)
-Toastman QoS settings for VOIP
reliable but lacks features

- I bought this router because it is one of the most reliable routers. It just works
all the time. No reboot needed.
Hardware version 1.1, Firmware Version: v4.30.14
- Weaknesses:
- The DHCP configuration possibilities are very poor.
There is no way to bind a MAC address to an IP address.
- Summary:
- I like it because it is reliable.
An $800 router with a $70 price tag

- .. because you can flash this router with DD-WRT firmware, it becomes a rocket ship. Thank you Linksys for allowing the prosumer to hack the device to make it even better. It unlocks serious potential like being able to boost RF power, CPU speed and to selective open and close physical external ports.
- Weaknesses:
- I've purchased dozens overs the year. Some for me, some for family and others for clients. They all run DD-WRT and are rock solid stable. Great range, great performance...
NO complaints
- Summary:
- A great unit, made better with flashable ROM at an even better price!
For the router configuration aware geeks

- Strengths:
- Simple DD-WRT install
- Weaknesses:
- Summary:
- This is the wireless router of choice for the router geek out there. Simple installation full versions of DD-WRT make this a powerful and perhaps more importantly STABLE wireless router platform. Use this for yourself or set it up for your friends, family, and clients. It will become the last component you check for failures. It just works and will do so for a long time.
Great Product

- DD-WRT flashing worked flawlessly giving the router seemingly endless tweakability. Excellent value for price. Solid wireless connectivity even two floors away. Makes a solid Network Bridge when connected with my Linksys wireless access point (WAP54G).
- Weaknesses:
- None found yet. I don't have any wireless 'N' devices, so I can't do a fair comparison between this device and one of the new wireless 'N' products.
- Summary:
- This is a no-brainer router purchase in my opinion. Once flashed with the latest DD-WRT build, you essentially have an industrial strength product at a consumer price. Highly recommended.
Great, Just Great

- Strengths:
- Tomato Firmware is Awesome, lots of features and nice AJAX interface (zippy)
Very Reliable
FAST local networking
Handles heavy traffic very well
(all with tomato firmware)
- Weaknesses:
- Hard to find sometimes
- Summary:
- Hard to find in stock sometimes but it's a great and reliable router. I've found most other wireless routers sensitive to surges (living out on an acreage) but this one's been going strong for about a year now. The Tomato firmware makes everything work. My local networking works flawlessly and connection speeds out to the net are super fast.
Worth the Money

- Strengths:
- - Incredible functionality after flashing latest DD-WRT firmware
- Connection up-time of at least 95% in the last 6 months of use
- 2 antennas. Allowed me to point one straight up so the main floor (same floor it was located) was given a great connection, while angling the second so that it gave my basement just as powerful of a connection
- Very cheap price for what third-party firmware allows it to do. Buy the router, and you get a free upgrade to a router worth well over double the amount
- Weaknesses:
- - Rare, but every once in a while... Connection will drop completely for a few minutes, though I suspect it is my ISP rather than router, but not sure. As posted above, this happens LESS than 5% of my 6 months of up-time
- Summary:
- Incredible after fast and easy firmware flash. Who needs wireless "N" when you have enough functionality to control every aspect of your router, right down to static leasing, and even transmit power (I lowered mine a little to save a little bit of router life, while still getting great connection EVERYWHERE in the house, while also knowing most people outside have very little chance of Hi-Jacking a connection they can't even detect).
Simply the best

- 8MB- can't go wrong
Load DD-WRT or Tomato and you have a solid router with way more funcitons.
Can't wait for GIG version.
- Weaknesses:
- Even with the Linus IOS I couldn't really find a problem.
Didn't have to reboot the router for a few weeks.
- Summary:
- This is the one you want.
The other models are limited to 2MB.
That doesn't matter if you are leaving the original IOS on.
Awesome!

- Strengths:
- - Replaceable Firmware. (DD-WRT anyone?)
- All the features of an enterprise router at a consumer cost (once the stock firmware has been replaced).
- Excellent performance and wireless range.
- Weaknesses:
- Automatically defaults to 'factory" settings when powered of unexpectedly. This has happened to me once or twice - so be sure to backup your settings.
- Summary:
- Excellent product. All firmware based products should be unlocked to allow the user to really expand the features (total control anyone?). I will give it a 5/5 - but beware the weakness I mentioned above.
Also - BE VERY CAREFUL WHEN UPDATING THE FIRMWARE. It's damn easy to make a mistake and render your unit usless (essentially "brick" it).
Great router, whether customized or not.

- Strengths:
- Reliable, Customizable
- Weaknesses:
- None
- Summary:
- Similar experience to the other reviewers. It ran great stock, but once I installed OpenWRT it ran like a dream. The only resets are when the power goes out, and with the package installer available it can provide features that would only be found on a router twice, or more, the price.
